From the Paper:

" Los Angeles is a 1000 square mile triangular shaped lowland bordered on the north by the San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the Puente Hills, and by the Pacific Ocean on the southwest. Real estate enterprise has been the driving force in the city's growth. The first growth boom was caused by railroad promotional campaigns throughout the country. Early electric railways promoted the land by providing easy access to remote areas, and cities and suburbs began to grow according to the subdividers' discretion. The auto became increasingly popular and by the 1930s, it became essential. New solutions were sought for the increase of autos on the road, calling for better roads and eventually, a system similar to today's freeways."
