Design and the Understanding of Elements

Paper Summary:

Design entails first understanding the elements to be included in the design and then the effect that the design will have on the human beings who experience it. This paper examines the short story, "Recitatif" by Toni Morrison and the "Letters to a Young Poet" by Rainer Marie Rilke to show some of the process of gathering data about the environment and understanding it, and some of the basic compositional elements of our surroundings which create emotional states within us, (as Rilke shows in his tour of Europe). The author also brings in a personal perspective.

"Twyla herself comes to doubt her own recollection, just as some of her perceptions about her friend in the present are off the mark, even as what her friend assumes about her is also wrong. The poet Rilke shows a more analytic nature as he observes different parts of Venice and responds both emotionally and intellectually. The designer needs to recognize both and can learn much from texts like these as well as from careful observation of life."
