The paper explains that these disasters were a result of careless strategies with derivatives and examines the lessons learned from these two disasters. Finally, the paper suggests measures that can be taken to prevent such disasters from happening again.

They are most frequently used to reduce exposure to changed in foreign exchange rates, interest rates, or stock indexes."
