"The modern, post-colonial histories of Nigeria and India are striking in their differences. While both of these countries gained their freedom in the last half of the twentieth century, only one of them, India, has really enjoyed the fruits that should be derived from independence. The following paper will focus specifically upon why democracy failed in the former while flourishing in the latter. To achieve the sort of clarity that a discussion of this sort warrants, the paper will review the role of institutions in the development or non-development of democracy in both lands. In particular, the paper will look at the role of the army in both lands, the role that political institutions played in the democratic development (and non-development) in both lands, and the sociological factors which permitted long-lasting abuses in one while opening a causeway..."
