This paper discusses how once the mentally ill were put into institutions where they had people who helped them with their problems, but now many of these people are living on the streets. According to the paper, deinstitutionalization is the program where people who have mental health problems were taken out of institutions and placed in homes. The paper stresses the impotance of defining the meaning of deinstitutionalization and why it has not worked the way it was planned.

"The story of deinstitutionalization is one of sadness and anger because people with mental illness on now homeless instead of being in institutions. "The National Institute of Mental Health defines the homeless mentally ill adult population as individuals, age 18 or older, who have long-term severe mental illness and no fixed place of residence" (Stubbs). While once the mentally ill were put into institutions where they had people who helped them with their problems, now many of these people are living on the streets. Deinstitutionalization is the program where people who have mental health problems were taken out of institutions and placed in homes. It is important to define the meaning of deinstitutionalization and why it has not worked the way it was planned."
