This paper is an examination of Dante's theology as revealed in the "Divine Comedy." It examines Dante's theories on the importance of love, his philosophy of divine grace and repentance, and his theory of purgatory. It also discusses the concept of repentance; the primary theme of "Purgatorio."
From the Paper:
"The primary theme of Purgatorio is repentance. In other words, should a person spend their life doing horrible things and then repent, they will not get a ticket straight to Heaven. Instead they will have to spend time in Purgatory. From the medieval perspective this is a good thing. If one has committed grievous sins and then is truly sorry for what he or she has done and spends time praying and asking for forgiveness this person will not be damned. This person will be offered a position of hope in a place of hope, a place called Purgatory."
