This paper discusses the suggestion of Clive Emsley that in the 1800s English citizens were prompted to view criminal behavior as it appeared in books and newspapers. However newspapers of the time primarily focused on acts of murder because the editors in the press had the ability of building up a case to a sensational level peaking the interest of the newspaper buying public.
