A review of the role of the media in crime prevention in early modern England.
1,800 words (approx. 7.2 pages) | 7 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the suggestion of Clive Emsley that in the 1800s English citizens were prompted to view criminal behavior as it appeared in books and newspapers. However newspapers of the time primarily focused on acts of murder because the editors in the press had the ability of building up a case to a sensational level peaking the interest of the newspaper buying public. The paper discusses the example of the case of Dr. Thomas Neal Cream in 1892, which was consistently promoted by the press as the capture, trial and impending execution of the prisoner unfolded.
