"Egypt s Coptic Christians: An Oppressed Minority

The Copts, an indigenous Christian sect, are Egypt s largest religious minority. Historically, and to the present time, they have often been victims of discrimination and oppression at the hands of the Muslim majority in general and, more significantly, victims of violence generated by the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood and related groups (Nyrop, p. 95). Estimates of the Coptic population in Egypt, last taken in the 1980s, ranged from a low of 3 to 4 million to a high of 6 to 7 million. This report will examine Muslim treatment of Copts in Egypt, arguing that renewed Muslim fundamentalism has made and continues to make the situation of this religious minority tenuous at best.
