Introduction
Member nations of the European Union (EU) in the contemporary period are attempting to meet the convergence criteria established by the Maastritch Treaty. This research (1) reviews the convergence criteria, (2) discusses problems encountered by countries in their attempts to meet the criteria placing an emphasis on the criterion related to the relationship between a country's governmental budget deficit and that country's gross domestic product (GDP), and (3) assesses the experience of selected countries in their attempts to meet the budget deficit/GDP criterion.
