"Looking back on the conflict that I earlier described as being between John and James within the context of my one-time place of employ, a number of things occur to me. I am struck by my own limited active role in the debate, that is to say that I had no active role in the conflict. I am also struck by the rapidity of the escalation of the debate. A minor conflict between two employees, with its roots in a parking dispute, erupted into an argumentative conflict that quickly consumed the very large staff of the place where I worked. Mostly, though, it strikes me just how ineffective the management was in defusing the situation and how the manager's poor use of his de facto power in the situation actually made matters worse instead of calming the situation.
