Paper Summary:

The following paper will look at the film, North Country, and explore what it says about conflict in the modern-day workplace. Particularly, the next several pages will look at what the film really says about gender relations in the contemporary workplace and how the introduction of women in ever-growing numbers into that workplace has challenged a patriarchal enclave wherein men could act as men - and know that their position was secure. Two major strands or themes will be touched upon in this paper during the course of illuminating the film's central message. The first theme is that women are held, in some industries at any rate, as a threat to the comfortable, insular world these men know so well; the second theme is that women like Josey Aimes are threatening to their male colleagues because the presence of women in large numbers constitutes a threat to the traditional male notion of the man as bread-winner. Since men will often identify with the jobs they hold, having women come along to take those jobs is a profound shock to the system and an undeniable threat to their self-identity.
