Inherent in any organization is a complex system of interactions that occur between people with differing views, personalities, backgrounds, and working styles. Conflict arises when incompatible goals surface, where individuals feel they must make a choice between something they are comfortable with and something they are not. This paper examines these issues and presents ideas for conflict resolution skills. It also looks at administrative considerations in conflict resolution.

"In contemporary times, the structural hierarchy of many organizations has been de-constructed, allowing more conflict to enter the workplace, but also more opportunity for resolution. According to Annette Simmons, who wrote Territorial Games, in the past certain groups had no trouble promoting their ways over others because various groups within an organization didn't always interact (Caudron, 2000). However, in modern society employees are required more and more to interact at different levels, and are often required to resolve conflicts themselves because of a lack of well defined hierarchical structure (Caudron, 2000). Thus employees must learn to acknowledge conflict as a part of everyday experience, and embrace it, encouraging conflict as a means of discussion and potential venue for the development of new processes."
