The subject of science can be an exciting and successful area for students with special needs, as long as the teacher takes the time to incorporate different learning styles into the lesson plans for the class. This paper discusses several teaching techniques which may be utilized when incorporating science lessons into classes containing special needs students. The paper also contains an example of a lesson-plan.
From the Paper:
"There are students who cannot read well due to blindness, dyslexia or other special needs. These students can learn the same material through audio learning. The ability to provide a documentary tape for viewing or a CD that presents the material is something that science teachers can do for their special needs students. In addition to these techniques, science presents a wonderful forum for those students who need to move about the classroom and use tactile sources for their learning. These students can create and carry out an experiment or build an object that represents the topic being studied in that science class. All of these techniques are easily used in the science world, even when the class is divided into groups or learning teams. Those on the team who have special needs can be assigned tasks that work in tandem with those needs to create a team effort that is evenly distributed instead of lopsided, which happens in many other subjects."
