Paper Summary:
This paper shows the importance of community and what can happen when it fails and how it can be restored. It does this through a review of the books "Still Me" by Christopher Reeve which shows how we turn to our interlocking communities when tragedy strikes and "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor E. Frankl which tells of his time as a prisoner in the Nazi death camps and how he truly lost the community he knew and found himself in another, one horrible in its formation. It also reviews the film "Welcome to Sarajevo" which depicts what happens when all sense of community is disrupted, when the institutions of society no longer function and when we are thrown back on our own initiative or that of the small groups which become our only sense of community.

"There are different kinds of organizational structure, from collective democratic, to authoritarian, to bureaucratic. The most common forms in American life are collective democratic and bureaucratic, though we may encounter authoritarian structures in business organizations. We all depend on our various communities for strength and support even though we may not realize that is what we are doing. We tend to know we are depending on the community when we have a special need, as when there is a natural disaster or we face some difficult health problem. Yet, we actually depend heavily on our community at all times and on the norms that define and regulate it."
