Community Health Systems
This paper examines an imaginary strike by healthcare service workers for improved conditions.
1,350 words (approx. 5.4 pages) | 3 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

The paper discusses how healthcare service workers are often looked on as being on the bottom rung of the labor ladder in a hospital setting. At the mythical Community Healthcare System, service workers are threatening to strike since labor demands for better wages and benefits that are not being met by Community Healthcare Systems management. This paper examines how this situation could have been prevented, how it can be resolved right now and how the post-situation stress can be mitigated.

From the Paper:

"Service employees in a hospital setting are usually taken for granted until they are not there, as in the case of a strike. Strikes, however, generally cause some level of embarrassment and overall feelings of hostility between the factions involved. Such is the case at Community Health System, a corporate healthcare organization with three hospital locations. Contractual negotiations between the union, responsible for the more than 2000 service employees at Community Health and management have broken down. Appropriately, dealings between unions and hospital administrative/ management matters are delegated to the Vice President or Director of Human Resources (HR) (Grossman, 2005). In this instance, when the Mary Martin, the Vice President of HR informed Community Health's CEO, Tim Harwood, of the situation, he was taken off guard, alarmed and asked "What went wrong?""
