900 words (approx. 3.6 pages) | 1 source | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses class and ways of communicating within certain class groups and between class groups. The paper discusses the position of Julie Lindquist who examines the interactions within one such social group, in her ethnographic study of the patrons of the Smokehouse bar.

From the Paper:

"Smokehouse Speakers Class matters. Certain social groups are expected to have certain methods of communicating. No matter where in the public arena that interaction takes place, these expectations create a dynamic between the participants in the conversation, which shapes the discussion. Julie Lindquist examines the interactions within one such social group, in her ethnographic study of the patrons of the Smokehouse bar. This paper will examine her position in this ethnography, as well as examining the discourse that Lindquist discusses in chapters 5 and 6. Julie Lindquist examines the culture of the Smokehouse bar in an effort to study the social interaction contained within its rhetoric. She states that: To study the rhetoric of a given social group is, also, inevitably, to consider how that group establishes relationships between language, culture, and truth."
