Paper Summary:
This paper cites examples to establish the fact that there is a role for both one-way and two-way communication in every organization, irrespective of structure and culture. The paper shows that, in the interests of employee motivation, as well as ensuring the effectiveness of the communication process, it is advisable that, in either case, the management solicits feedback to ensure that messages have been received and decoded properly. In addition, the paper shows that it is important that an organization allow for some degree of employee participation and involvement, where relevant, in order to ensure that decisions taken have factored in ground-level realities. Indeed, the failure to do precisely that is the prime reason for unsuccessful, top-down, one-way communication.
From the Paper:
"An example that comes to mind is the announcement of safety regulations that are mandated by regulatory authorities. But even in this case, it is important that the management ensure that the new regulations have registered with the employees or receivers through the use of effective channels. In fact, it is advisable to use multiple channels such as individual memos, bulletin board notices, posters in work areas, employee handbooks that spell out procedures, and most important, personal briefings by immediate supervisors. The use of such multiple channels will ensure that the frequency of a receiver's exposure to the safety message acts as an aid to the message registering and thereafter being followed."
