College Rankings
An analysis of the issue of college rankings.
1,580 words (approx. 6.3 pages) | 8 sources | MLA | 2004 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the phenomena of college ranking by two of the most widely disseminated magazine issues, "Consumer Reports" and "U.S. News and World Reports". The paper contends that college educations are no longer bargains, no matter what the eventual value of such an education. The paper acknowledges that even with scholarships, grants and government education loans, the financial impact on most families is severe. The paper explains that following this truth, there is a lot of "shopping" for the college most affordable that provides the optimum education/cost value and benefit.

From the Paper:

"To begin with, before discussing the rankings themselves, it may be worthwhile to seen how U.S. News ranks colleges. "It's clear that there will never be unanimity about how best to evaluate colleges and universities...Our reason for ranking colleges is to help high school students choose a school where they can thrive." (Graham, p. 1) U.S. News places a big caveat on their ranking information: don't use their system as a substitute for other information."
