Client Privacy

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the issue of client privacy and confidentiality in health care and services. It discusses the code of ethics and standards of practice of the American Counseling Association and the ethical standards of school counselors of the American School Counselor Association. The paper discusses expectations from adults and children in terms of confidentiality and the legal and ethical requirements of the service providers.

From the Paper:

"Counselors are expected to demonstrate ethical standards and lawful behavior, regardless of his or her professional credentials or work setting (MacDonald). This can be especially challenging because law and ethics are based on different understandings that produce different actions, and it is these different actions that often present a counselor with ethical-legal dilemmas (MacDonald)."
