This paper discusses the growth of the Roman Catholic Church during the Middle Ages and the split (schism) of the Church into east and west.

"The Roman Catholic Church played a pivotal role in society during the Middle Ages. Though it was a stagnant period in time regarding advancement in civilization, the church grew substantially. The Christian religion became a cornerstone in the lives of many in the western and eastern sides of the Roman Empire. The Roman Catholic Church was also cause for offspring beliefs forming new rival religions. In retrospect the church offered hope, structure, and order at a time that was lacking those aspects. The church controlled religion, philosophy, morals, politics, art and education. Basically it dominated the western world. It was said that during the thirteenth century the Catholic Church owned one third of the land in Europe. The Middle Ages was a time where the Roman Catholic Church was most influential to society, but at the same time was a dreadful period for the church. It is known as the dark ages for true Christianity. A cause for this corruptive time for the church was the departure from the teaching of the Bible and the engrossing in real heresy."
