1,350 words (approx. 5.4 pages) | 9 sources | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper introduces Xin Lui's, 'The Otherness of Self'. The paper discusses how this Chinese literary work reviews the significant differences of self-perception and ontology in Chinese civilization, as compared to Western civilization.

From the Paper:

"Concepts of time and history's recording of events have changed towards challenges in the present, in understanding pre-modern ideas of time to shape whole past civilizations. The contemporary historian has to be aware of this difference and also, to intuit the implications of societies that did not share the tidy chronology of Western consciousness. Xin Lui's, 'The Otherness of Self', refers to significant differences of self-perception and ontology in Chinese civilization (136f). First, the Chinese individual is normally oriented towards the family or group, in keeping with various non-Western persons, as opposed to the individual premise implied in scholarly work."
