Child Abuse

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses the issue of child abuse and its effects on young children. It focuses on the issue of when child abuse may begin, and then discusses the direct effects upon the child. Issues such as problems socially interacting with others, poor grades, self-blame and doubt, hiding the abuse from society and the longer term effects of post traumatic stress disorder are discussed.

"Child abuse can occur in many forms. Young children who are abused may suffer from verbal abuse, sexual abuse, malnourishment, neglect, physical attacks, or any number of instances that serve to demean, humiliate, harm or degrade a child ("Covering" 1). Society often rushes to the television set to hear about cases of murder that have involved a child's abuse, and quickly, the social order locates someone to blame for the occurrence. Once this happens those who believed it to be so horrific often forget the instance of abuse. However, more often than not society forgets to realize the effect that any abuse has upon a child, and the manner in which a child must learn to adapt to the world while existing in an abusive situation. In our modern culture, child abuse may begin before birth."
