This paper begins with a brief description of the computer's central processing unit, its function, how it works and its purpose. The paper then takes a look at the variations in CPU technology and the race between competing computer technology companies to produce the fastest, smallest, most powerful unit. The paper also questions the need for such advances in CPU technology and whether we will benefit from those changes.

"Central processing units, or CPUs, are vital to the functioning of any computer in that they provide the machine with its ability to manipulate information. Disk drives, RAM, monitors and keyboards - these other components of a computer exist to serve as a link between the user and the central processing unit. There are also a number of coprocessors within the computer, such as specialized processors for sound cards and graphics and keyboards. However, it is the central processing unit which provides the computer with its most fundamental abilities."
