Paper Summary:
"Carnivale" is an original series produced by Home Box Office. It is set in America in the 1930s and is full of religious and occult symbolism and motifs. HBO is currently airing the second season of the show, but the episode this paper focuses on is the finale of the first season. It looks at the religious messages through the characters of the series.
From the Paper:
"The struggles of Justin and Ben present different views about God and fate. At some point, both characters surrender to what they view as God's will. The difference is in the amount of responsibility they take for their own actions. Justin, whose faith is absolute, believes that he is doing God's work. When faced with the possibility that he is evil, he retreats from it into a fatalistic outlook. Rather than attempt to change, he resigns to the idea that God wants him to do evil for some grander purpose."
