"The purpose of this research is to examine the bustle period of the nineteenth century. The plan of the research will be to set forth the context of popular and fashion culture in which the bustle fashion emerged, and then to discuss whether, how, and to what extent the bustle came from ideas held by participants in the fashion about body beauty.


The bustle period of the nineteenth century lasted from about 1865 to about 1890 (Barton, 1935), with the fullness of popularity for the bustle emerging in America and Western Europe at about 1880. The question of whether the bustle came from popular ideas about beauty and the body must be understood in the context of social trends that exercised influence on trends in fashion. And this is why it is important to see the phenomenon..."
