Paper Summary:
The paper explains that, today, the business information system function is changing the internal operations and the management of procedures within an organization; therefore, a business professional must understand the impact of the technology not only to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of all the existing business processes but also to create, enlarge and improve certain opportunities, which were not in existence before the system was inculcated into the organization. The author points out that, unlike the old information systems, which were rigid and inflexible; the newer information systems now permit a freer flow of information from all points within the organization. The paper relates that the 'Anticipatory Management Decision Process Model', which was used by the United Airlines, Royal Dutch Shell and McDonald's, can be of great help to management in their decision-making processes within the organization. From the Paper:
"All the employees within the organization could be encouraged to use their own creativity and other skills for the betterment of the company, and also to be more intrapreneurial in spirit. This type of organization and re-structuring is completely intertwined with the basic structuring of a company's new information systems. The old and rigid type of functioning of the organization is now being replaced by the distinct and clear-cut separation of the various organizational functions into well-defined units. This system offers numerous advantages, one of them being that this type of separation would economize on the various information and the communication requirements and needs of the firm across the different functional units that have been delineated, and this helps to reduce and cut down on costs as well as reduce the innate complexity of the various functions within an efficiently functioning unit of the organization."
