The term originated from the Indian word bangla, which means a low house, which has porches around it. At around the turn of the 20th century, Victorian architecture was prevalent in North America, and people were ready for a move to something less stuffy - something that would put more emphasis on comfort. This set the stage for the rise of bungalows to which many architects would contribute. "
