Written in 2005; 1,350 words; 8 sources; $ 53.95
Paper Summary:
This paper looks at the history of Buddhism, as well as some of its basic beliefs and tenets. The paper also discusses the life of the Buddha and his achievements. Also briefly discussed are the relationship between modern psychology, psychotherapy and Buddhism and the popularity and importance of Buddhism in today's world.
From the Paper:
"Lots of people know what it means to be "very Zen" about something, or have a friend that does yoga, or has seen pictures of red-robed monks in remote Asian monasteries, but not nearly as many westerners are familiar with where these images and concepts come from. Most will have some awareness that there are people out there called Buddhists, but aside from making jokes about trees falling in the forest, or imitating movies, they're not likely to know what Buddhism is. This paper will attempt to provide an understanding of the basic concepts of Buddhism, including its creation and history, the basic concepts and belief structures of the religion, and its relationship to modern issues such as psychology. Buddhism is not exactly a religion, not exactly a philosophy and when carefully examined, not even a single separate thing (Eckel 144)."
