↶ Look Inside
Paper Summary:
Buddhism began in India and made its way to China and Korea. From there, it ended up in Japan. This paper discusses the many different periods Buddhism went through when becoming an official religion in China, Korea, and Japan. The paper touches on the distinct features of Buddhism in each country and how they have been molded by political and historical events.
From the Paper:
"In the middle of the nineteenth century, the Japanese emperor gained control and ordered the destruction of Buddhism. As a result, many Buddhist temples were demolished and Buddha images and scriptures burned. The Japanese Buddhists responded by modernizing Buddhism. Schools and universities were built and Buddhist monks were given a modern education. Since then, many religious groups have been established as modifications of the former sects. At the same time, the older sects still exist and still have many followers both inside and outside Japan."
