"The form of the painting Portrait of a Young Man by Bronzino features the young man of the title in more or less centered in the frame, showing him from his left side as he is half turned toward the viewer. This is a vertical painting, composed in terms of vertical lines emphasizing the height of the young man. The vertical lines seen behind him make up a corner of the room, a portion of wall that juts out, the frame around the door, and part of the door behind him. The only real horizontal in the picture makes up the table on which he rests his book, held itself so that the top of the book shows as a vertical shape held open by his finger to keep his place, balanced against the arm of the chair behind him."
