In 1984, when he became prime minister, he was unique in the sense that he was the first Canadian prime minister who was not a career politician. He had previously been a businessman, and became prime minister when his party, the Progressive Conservative Party (PC), won the most parliamentary seats in Canadian history. With no political experience, Mulroney had become the leader of the PC. Mulroney served as prime minister until 1993, a period of nine years.
