This paper discusses the theme of determinism, a theme that appears frequently in various literary works through the ages. The paper defines determinism, or fatalism, as the idea that what happens or has happened in some sense has to or had to happen. Fatalism is a transcultural concept and is found over the whole of history, as Indian karma, Chinese ming, and Greek moira. The paper reviews the example of Shakespeare's 'King Lear' where determinism plays a major role. The paper further discusses the work of Thomas Hardy who is said to really identify with fatalism.
