This paper explains that inspecting and interpreting the blood found at a crime scene can be one of the most important steps of an investigation. This paper discusses the importance of this type of evidence and concludes that the blood evidence at a crime scene needs to be preserved and properly documented meticulously so that the benefits of blood spatter analysis do not go untapped in an investigation.

"Bloodstains are used to reconstruct crimes and solve mysteries because blood, as a fluid, will follow the laws of physics, and can therefore be predicted. Spot size, quantity, shape, distribution, location, angle of impact, and target surface are some of the variables which go into the equation to form the whole picture. (NIFS) The position of the victim and attacker, and the type of weapon and methods used can be determined by, for example, the shape of the blood spots. For example, if an object is moving the blood spot will be shaped something like an exclamation mark, while an object that is not in motion will leave a circular stain with notable edges. (NIFS) Blood spots on the ceiling in a line usually mean that the victim was killed violently, by someone using a weapon above his head, while smears on the floor would be indicative that the victim was crawling or being dragged on the floor."
