"Birth centers are places women can go to have their babies if they cannot afford or do not wish them to be born in a hospital. They are staffed with nurses and midwives so the mothers receive appropriate medical attention. This paper will give a brief history of these centers, the need for them, give a brief history of the development, licensure, accreditation and reimbursement of birth centers and nurse-midwives, and look at the research evidence for the safety, satisfaction to mothers, and the economic savings of birth centers.
Birth centers are not new, and the first nurse-midwifery center was established in the US in New Mexico by Sr Theophane of the Medical Mission Sisters of Philadelphia. The center was built by the Sisters to accommodate women whom they felt lived too far away from the hospital for a home birth. The center became..."
