This illness usually first occurs in early adulthood and remains a life long illness for the patient. This paper examines the causes, symptoms and treatment options of bipolar disorder and shows how it affects children and adults.

"Some persons with bipolar disorder also have other psychiatric disorders that complicate treatment of the bipolar. These are panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, ADHD, personality disorder and substance abuse. Children are often misdiagnosed as having ADHD and/or ADD, but in actuality have bipolar disorder. When children are placed on drugs such as Ritalin and the behavior worsens, it could be because the child has been misdiagnosed. Once this disease was thought of as an adult disease, but it is now recognized as an illness that can develop in a child. In fact, many children who have bipolar disease have rapid cycling phases daily and this makes it more difficult for professionals to diagnose them. Furthermore, the new warnings regarding antidepressants possibly increasing the risk of suicide in children and adolescents is a block in treating children appropriately for this disease."
