Bell Witch
A look at the history of the folklore of the Bell Witch legend.
2,106 words (approx. 8.4 pages) | 13 sources | MLA | 2003 United States

Paper Summary:

This paper discusses themes, motifs, and variations in tales of the Bell Witch haunting. It compares and contrasts multiple variations of the legend and includes an analysis of many details surrounding the legend.

From the Paper:

"Broomsticks flying through moonlit night skies, black cats, steaming cauldrons, warts, pointy black hats, and spells that turn a person into a toad. If you're a member of western culture, this imagery probably conjures up the vision of a witch within your mind, because this seems to be how witches are commonly portrayed in western holidays, in western fiction, and in various other aspects of western culture. However, another portrayal of the witch in American folklore consists of an entity which transcends mortal flesh, and, as a ghost-like form may cast spells, drain away life and vitality from victims, and so forth (Konstantinos, p.34) . Perhaps one of the most well known examples of such an entity is found in the southern US folk legend of the Bell Witch."
