A look at how immigrants shaped the growth and industrialization of Chicago in the last half of the nineteenth century. Especially important is the willingness of new workers to ujdnertake low skilled jobs, such as at the Union stock yards, but also to begin to rise up against overwork and overcrowding and low wages through strikes. And yet Chicago owes its stature to immigrants and their contributions.

BECOMING AMERICANS IN THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY The last half of the Nineteenth Century was still a time when the message on the Statue of Liberty was true. "Give me your tired and your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" While some immigrants arrived still believing that America's streets were paved with gold and that there was complete liberty and justice for all, and that there was plenty of rewarding work to be had, some of these new arrivals became disillusioned and perhaps disappointed.
