↶ Look Inside

Paper Summary:

Today even the church acknowledges that one can be a corporate team player and still remain an essentially moral person, in touch with one's personal and cultural values. This paper shows, however, that this stamp of approval does not necessarily make the worker's position any easier. As a rash of corporate scandals and the everyday little economic injustices of life remind us, anyone working in an accountable position in business may find themselves having to balance personal political and ethical values, with the greater values and goals of the organization as a whole. The paper examines the difficulties associated with balancing values in a person's business and private life.

From the Paper:

"At the same time, if a corporation is behaving in a way that grossly violates the moral values of an individual's private conviction, then it is the place of that employee to act in accordance with their conscience, whether by becoming a whistle blower, by speaking to authorities within the corporation itself, or possibly just by refusing to participate in that activity. This needs to be both an individual decision and something embraced by collective groups that speak for individuals. "Although it may be practically impossible for individual accountants to resist -- or to refuse to aid and abet evil activity -- it is possible for private accounting groups like the state CPA societies, the AICPA and IMA to resist." "
