"One of the most shameful incidents in the history of American medical science is discussed by James H. Jones in his book Bad Blood, detailing the experiments by the United States Public Health Service concerning untreated syphilis in black men in Macon County, Alabama, known as the Tuskegee Study after the county seat. The author tells the story well and does so without inserting himself overly into the narrative. Instead, he lets the facts speak for themselves, along with many of the participants in both the original study and in the subsequent investigation and court case once the issue was revealed to the public some 40 years after the study was undertaken.
