From the Paper:
"Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) training focuses on getting autistic children to communicate, and also acts as a way for non-talking autistic children to communicate. Pictures of objects take the place of specific words, as a child exchanges a picture for something that they want. The technique is easy to understand by the child, and initiated for the child (Autism Society of America). Further, given that most children with special needs, including autistic children, are visual-spatial learners (rather than auditory learners) PECS training may allow these children to learn in the way that is the most comfortable to them (Hodgdon)."
