"Since there is so much disagreement about the very definition of ADD, as shown above, there is also disagreement about its causes. In terms of characteristics or symptoms, "Common characteristics of hyperactivity can include excessive talking, constant fidgeting, or constantly being on the go as if driven by a motor. Since most everyone exhibits these characteristics, the AD/HD diagnosis is dependent upon the frequency that the characteristics are exhibited. Typically the diagnosis is determined by analysis of parent and teacher rating scales (behavioral checklists) and a patient interview" (Freer, 2004). This may be a biased situation in which the symptoms are gathered by the teacher."
