A rapid devaluation of the baht suddenly reduced export revenues, made imports much more expensive and made capital investments in Thailand less attractive. This was an economic meltdown that soon spread to Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan. Asian stock prices plunged as a result and there were worldwide repercussions.
