675 words (approx. 2.7 pages) | 1 source | 2005 United States

Paper Summary:

In this paper, it is shown that chance is the far more logical explanation in the work of Empedocles, as Aristotle places far too much reliance on human logic and rational, which he imposes on the causalities of Nature. This insular view does not provide ample logic to define non-functioning limbs, which he imparts a sense of conscious apparatus for Nature. The paper explains how Empedocles presents a far wider and open definition of Nature that provides more creativity, and inventiveness on the part of nature to present chance in how animal parts evolve in relation to survival.

From the Paper:

"This philosophical study will present a logical argument that denounces Aristotle's claims that Nature provides animals with various body parts as a form of functionality. This teleological premise will be supported by the various elements of logical argument, which will support the argument of `chance' that is imposed by Empedocles. In essence, Aristotle imparts an "intelligent purpose" on the part of Nature to give living biological entities a teleological function, but Empedocles offers greater logic in his argument through a wider naturalistic premise. Empedocles invariably offers what would in be modern times a Darwinist point of view that elucidates the basis of `chance' on the functionality of animal parts for survival. The basis of Empedocles argument functions on the premise that animals are a part of creation, and do not have to have functioning parts to survive."
