From the Paper:
"The age of Modernism was an emerging period that did not happen in a spurt, but gradually developed. The emergence of Modernism changed and influenced the writers of the 20th century. Modern writers and poets were often influenced by symbolism, preferring to convey emotions by means of strong images and unusual symbols. Modernism thus marks a distinctive break with the Victorian bourgeois morality; "rejecting 19th century optimism, they present a profoundly pessimistic picture of a culture in disarray" (Keep). This despair often results in an apparent apathy and moral revolution."
