"Sustainable development has become one of the most prevalent concepts in environmental policy planning. The original concept was conceived in a report by the World Commission on Environment and Development. The report defines sustainable development as, "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own" (WCED 1987: 43). This relatively simple concept has become one of the most important concepts in environmental policy.
