Paper Summary:

The paper takes a look at some of the freedoms and responsibilities that are associated with modern parenting. First, the paper discusses some of the factors that have cut down on the availability and quality of today's parents and examines their effects. Then the paper describes the actual responsibilities that should be expected of all parents and their children.

"In today's fast-paced, work-first society, there often seems to be a lack of emphasis placed upon the importance of parental involvement in child-rearing. With so many other social pressures, responsibilities, and opportunities to be had, one's children are frequently placed at the lowest end of one's priorities. With rising costs of living, static wages, inflation, so many places to be and so many things to do and so many technological entertainments and diversions with which to pass the scarce free time that a parent might find, there is little time left to actually parent, to be at home with one's child or children, to take a firsthand, responsible role in their lives and development. All too often, this burden of influence and rearing is placed upon over-stressed and underpaid teachers, apathetic nannies or daycare providers, or other relatives."
