Paper Summary:

The paper looks at the debate over government intervention and or handling of health care for the nation that is an ongoing debate. When comparing the health care delivery systems of the United States versus those of the rest of the world, the paper reveals that although the US spends more than any other nation, we also have a relatively poor ranking, mostly due to our lack of insurance coverage for a significant portion of the population.

"According to research, the United States "wastes" more funds on bureaucratic overhead than it is predicted would be required to provide required health care to those the 44 million Americans without health insurance (Himmelstein, Woolhandler & Wolfe, n.d.). It was estimated that administrative overhead consumed over $399.4 billion of the $1,660.5 billion spent on healthcare, averaging $1,389 out of $5,775 per capita in the US (Himmelstein, Woolhandler & Wolfe, n.d.). Compared to the 31 percent administrative costs for healthcare siphoned off the top of medical funding in the United States in 1999, Canada only spent an average of 16.7%, remaining flat since 1971 (Himmelstein, Woolhandler & Wolfe, n.d.)."
