This paper examines the life of Alexander Hamilton, the first secretary of the treasury who placed the U.S. on a firm financial footing. Hamilton was a decisive man of action who fought in the battles around New York in 1775 and whose zeal and organizing ability brought him to George Washington's attention which led to a commission as colonel in the Continental Army. "Hamilton's basic plan of government consisted of two legislatures, comprised by an assembly directly elected by the people to a three year term, and a senate, chosen by electors from senatorial districts to serve based upon merit, or good behavior. In addition to the aforementioned legislative bodies, there would be a Judiciary, consisting of twelve justices who would also serve based upon merit. This judiciary would have both original and appellate jurisdictions."
