1,234 words (approx. 4.9 pages) | 6 sources | MLA | 2006 United States

Paper Summary:

The author discusses how alcoholism used to be viewed as a behavioral problem, but after medical studies and research has been done over the years, it is now commonly viewed as a medical disease. This paper details current studies, which examine the relationship between alcoholism and genetics and within the family dynamic.

From the Paper:

"Alcoholism is a multidimensional illness, one that cannot occur in isolation from the numerous factors that impact the life of an individual. It is necessary to consider the social and environmental factors that contribute to this disease, and to remember that exposure to the substance ethanol is essential to its expression. It cannot be entirely separated from other psychiatric disorders that may be present along with the disease, and there may be a dual diagnosis to further complicate the manifestation of alcoholism."
