Schuckit also states that medically, alcohol disorder also comprises between 5-25% of the national healthcare budget and is associated with 90% of all liver disease, 72% of all pancreatic disorders, 41% of seizure disorders and surprisingly, 13% of breast cancers. The average individual with an alcohol disorder reduces his life expectancy by 15 years. Alcoholism was not recognized as a disease until the middle of the nineteenth century. In 1960, however, Jellinek published "The Disease Concept of Alcoholism" that drew the public's attention to the disorder and distinguished between excessive drinking and alcoholism.
